UN chief issues warning against nuclear proliferation risk

On Monday, the UN’s top official issued a warning about the danger of nuclear proliferation.

According to a UN statement, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged parties to demonstrate that stopping the nuclear threat is feasible during the current review meeting of NPT parties, which began on August 1 and ends on Friday.

He emphasized that throughout the negotiations, all parties had shown flexibility and a willingness to make concessions.

“Nuclear saber-rattling must cease,” Guterres said, urging states to reaffirm their commitment to sit down and negotiate in order to reduce tensions and put an end to the nuclear arms race forever.

He also said that states should work together to resolve their differences through diplomacy and conversation, adding that “the destiny of humanity is in our hands.”
