APEC to boost collaboration in environmentally responsible forest management

As the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) region ramps up its fight against climate change and pushes measures for a sustainable future, ministers responsible for forestry from APEC nations are pushing for stronger cooperation to stop deforestation and additional biodiversity loss.

According to a release from the 5th APEC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Forestry, which was received here on Thursday, APEC economies account for more than 50% of the world’s forest lands, 60% of the world’s wood products, and 80% of the world’s commerce in forest products.

The ambitious goal of APEC member economies is to increase the amount of forest cover in the area by at least 20 million hectares by 2020.

As the forest cover in APEC rose by 27.9 million hectares between 2007 and 2020, such an objective has been met and even surpassed.

The global environmental threats, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, as well as the economic and social repercussions of the Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic and other global challenges, all remain major concerns of the forest policy, according to Thailand’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut Silpa-archa. “Although we were able to complete our mission in 2020, still, these wake-up calls—which include global environmental threats—remain key concerns of the forest policy

In his opening remarks, Minister Varawut highlighted Thailand’s long-term strategy, the bio-circular-green (BCG) economy model, to combat the present global dangers at the APEC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Forestry in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

In order to produce value and advance sustainable business models across all industries, including forestry, the model blends three economic philosophies without compromising the demand for forest products.

He praised the work of the APEC Experts Group on Illicit Logging and Associated Trade and asked member nations to work even more together to share expertise and best practices for preventing illegal logging and related trade among APEC nations.

The area has a greater need to ensure that forests are managed responsibly because APEC is the leading destination for international trade in forest products, according to Varawut.

No matter where we are or who we are, we cannot escape from the negative effects of climate change, he continued. “The globe is currently in jeopardy.”

The APEC ministers agreed that forests are crucial to combating climate change, both in terms of reducing emissions and adapting to them, particularly as we work to achieve carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases.

Therefore, action is required to maintain the forest cover, stop forest loss, stop forest degradation, and manage forests sustainably.

“We are becoming more and more aware of the effects of the extreme weather that is occurring around the world, especially in our area, as a result of climate change. Drought, floods, heat waves, etc. These are undoubtedly Mother Nature’s way of telling us that waiting to act or acting slowly will cost us, “Rebecca Sta Maria, the APEC Secretariat’s executive director, stated.

“Our gathering here is important in light of this situation. Forestry has the potential to be a major industry in attaining green growth because of its special function and contribution to sustainable development “She spoke.
