The structure for the Asean transport corridor was completed early, which pushed

Nguyn Quc Dng, the Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, has encouraged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member nations to complete the travel corridor structure as soon as possible so that important business travel may resume safely.

On Thursday, the official was speaking at the Asean Joint Consultative Meeting (JCM).

Brunei, which will hold the Asean Chairmanship in 2021, hosted the ceremony via videoconference.

Despite the difficult coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) situation in the area, participants at the conference acknowledged the progress made in Asean community-building over the past six months.

They pledged their nations’ support for Brunei’s efforts to promote the Asean’s objectives and priorities this year.

They decided to create a high-level drafting committee this year and to develop a blueprint for the Asean Community’s post-2025 vision.

The conference also agreed to develop an Asean master plan for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, as well as to speed up the Strategic and Holistic Initiative to Link Asean Responses to Emergencies and Disasters (Asean SHIELD).

Officials decided to increase the acquisition of Covid-19 vaccinations for member countries via UNICEF and the COVAX Facility, and asked Asean to utilize USD10.5 million from its Covid-19 response fund to buy vaccines as soon as possible.

The nations emphasized the significance of the whole bloc’s involvement in executing the Asean Comprehensive Recovery Framework, as well as assisting businesses, vulnerable groups, and remote regions in the region, in order to achieve long-term recovery.

They welcomed and approved Viet Nam’s proposal to host an Asean forum on sub-regional cooperation in the third quarter of this year, with the goal of closing the development gap between sub-regions in order to achieve complete recovery and long-term development.

They also praised the results of the regional meeting on the execution of the Asean Integration Initiative for the period 2021–2025, which took place on May 19 and was led by Vietnam.

Deputy Minister Dng said Asean should emphasize recovery and connectivity by successfully executing the Asean Comprehensive Recovery Framework and finalizing an Asean travel corridor agreement framework to ease travel throughout the bloc as soon as possible.

He also mentioned the effects of the Covid-19 epidemic on the region, including as the widening development gap between Asean sub-regions.

The official urged member nations to help distant regions, such as the Mekong sub-region, recover from the epidemic and maintain the grouping’s shared growth pace.
