DND chief: Be role models for others.

In honor of National Heroes Day, Undersecretary Jose Faustino Jr., the officer in command of the Department of National Defense (DND), urged Filipinos on Monday to sacrifice for others, including family, friends, and total strangers, in honor National Heroes Day.

Faustino expressed optimism that Filipinos would follow in the footsteps of heroes who battled for their nation’s freedom, those who led the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, and those who worked abroad as Filipinos.

“On this day as well, we honor the service and contributions of our contemporary heroes, like the COVID-19 pandemic frontline troops, the first responders in disaster relief efforts, the overseas Filipino workers, and the unsung heroes in our daily lives. I exhort my countrymen to help people whenever they can, whether it is family, friends, or total strangers,” he added.

“Emilio Aguinaldo, one of our heroes, once stated, “We cannot free ourselves until we advance together in a single desire.” To achieve peace and growth for our nation in these trying times, we must act with courage and strength in the face of obstacles and maintain our unity.”

The day honors Filipino patriots who opted to fight for independence till the end, according to Carlito Galvez Jr., secretary of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity.

Galvez added, “Our people have been facing enormous obstacles brought about by the Covid-19 outbreak for the past two years that have damaged all parts of our way of life. Our nation may no longer be facing an armada of conquerors from foreign places.”

A new generation of heroes emerged in the nation during the epidemic, demonstrating the importance of devotion, selflessness, and determination in resolving health issues.

“These brave men and women — physicians, nurses, soldiers, police officers, barangay health workers, fast food service crew, riders, manufacturing workers, and local government officials — have been putting themselves in harm’s way to protect their countrymen,” Galvez added.

He pleaded with the populace to honor those who have been risking their lives to serve.

“Let’s not forget the peacemakers, activists, and laborers who are leading the charge to advance and maintain the successes of the all-encompassing Philippine peace process.” They are also among the unsung heroes of our country, “added he.

Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., head of the Philippine National Police, said it is a momentous day in the history of the nation.

In addition to remembering the past, he continued, “as we commemorate this auspicious day, we also pay respect and the highest esteem to our many modern-day heroes—our frontline workers who selflessly served the community during this pandemic, our police officers who gave their lives battling illegal drugs, and to all of us who have faced numerous challenges and difficulties as a result of Covid-19.
