Fight fake news with the government: PBBM

The communication specialists have been urged to help the government of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in the fight against false information and fake news.

According to Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles, who spoke at the 2022 National Public Relations Congress on Thursday, Marcos is hopeful that communicators would use their voices to “leverage positive communication in stirring the nation toward full recovery and permanent togetherness.”

She spoke in front of public relations (PR) officers and communication specialists at the Peninsula Manila in Makati City, urging them to help the government in the battle against the spread of misinformation and disinformation through inclusive, empathetic, and responsible communication.

Cruz-Angeles made the statement while pointing out that the Marcos administration had implemented the “One Messaging Policy,” which tries to avoid disinformation, misdirection, and malicious information by fostering tight cooperation among executive branch institutions.

Cruz-Angeles claimed that the government sought to promote a “renewed sense of unity” in the nation because it was “serious” about doing so.

She claimed that intensifying the effort to curb the spread of false information will make the Philippines a “stronger” country.

As a result, she stated, “as we pass this tipping point, our nation will emerge stronger, a nation where our words may not only be voiced freely but may also be used as an instrument to shape our country’s future.”

The National PR Congress is an annual gathering of local and foreign delegates who work in PR and communication. It is held by the nonprofit Public Relations Society of the Philippines.

The first day of the 2022 National PR Congress was dedicated to discussing topics such as the five-year roadmap that reimagines the new normal, training “tomorrow’s true champions,” utilizing data innovation for truth and good, communicating wellness through the pandemic, and the role of positive communication in nation-building.

To help the Marcos administration be “more sensitive” to Filipino concerns, Cruz-Angeles stated in August that the OPS would develop a “more thorough” feedback mechanism.

Cruz-Angeles acknowledged the value of public commentary on how well the government is performing.
