Peace adviser wishes for improved PH government and MNLF cooperation

In order to improve the lives of its former soldiers and integrate them into society, the government and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) must work more closely together, according to the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU).

Carlito Galvez Jr., chief secretary of OPAPRU, stated in his message for the 26th anniversary of the signing of the 1996 Final Peace Agreement (FPA) that “there is a need for stronger collaboration between the government and MNLF in the implementation of the Transformation Program that aims to reintegrate the former combatants into mainstream society fully, uplift their lives and the welfare of their families, and build more progressive and resilient MNLF communities.”

In the peace negotiations between the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the MNLF, he continued, the creation of the FPA marked a significant turning point and a bright moment.

Galvez remarked, “Since the signing of the peace agreement, we have seen how the MNLF has continued to tread the path of peace despite the many obstacles that seemed to undermine the advancements made over the years.”

He also praised the MNLF for playing a crucial role in initiatives for peace and security in their communities, particularly by setting an exemplary example and persuading lawless individuals to give up their weapons and join the legal system.

The MNLF has been actively involved in aiding the government in ‘rido’ (clan war) settlements since the signing of the peace agreement, empowering their women and youth through various peacebuilding efforts, community organizing, and also playing an active role in the mainstream governance aspect, he said.

Galvez continued by saying that they are grateful to the MNLF leadership for helping the group stick to its course and keep its FPA obligations.

“Therefore, it makes us extremely happy to learn that the MNLF’s top brass has committed to cooperating under the leadership of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. The OPAPRU is convinced that we will be able to finish the implementation of all signed Bangsamoro peace agreements thanks to the emergence of a new generation of MNLF leaders, some of whom are currently members of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, “Galvez remarked.

In order to build on and maintain the success of peace between the GPH and MNLF, he also urged Filipinos to remember the lessons of the past.

Galvez added, “To the leadership and members of the MNLF, we applaud all of you for your unwavering dedication to peace and for consistently supporting the national government’s efforts to create a just and lasting peace for all Filipinos.
