ASTI is working on a robot that can identify plant illnesses.

According to the institute’s chief official, the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) is working on a robot that might identify plant problems and assist farmers in increasing productivity.

According to ASTI Director Franz de Leon in an interview with the Philippine News Agency, the robot would initially be used in a banana plantation to identify disease-affected plants even at the early stages.

“Plantations currently operate in labor- and time-intensive manner. It can be too late to identify and treat plant diseases without insufficient labor. Reduced yields may come from this, which would ultimately increase farmers’ profits, “added he.

By utilizing AI-based techniques for computer vision, sensing, and navigation, the ROAMER (Robot for Optimized and Autonomous Mission-Enhanced Responses) initiative intends to help agriculture businesses improve their day-to-day operations, according to de Leon.

Banana plantations are the AI models’ initial target market and are being developed exclusively for diseases affecting bananas.

The engineers from ASTI are creating the robot, and according to de Leon, the project team has teamed up with a banana plantation in Mindanao for the pilot research.

“Utilizing the technology has the primary benefit of increasing a plantation’s produce. This is accomplished via early disease diagnosis that could cause preventable damage to the crop. Consequently, this initiative aims to help improve the nation’s food security by using technology, “said Antonio Banzon, the project’s head.

De Leon added that ROAMER has a PHP24.7 million budget for a three-year deployment.

By June 2024, the project should be completed, starting in June 2021.

According to ASTI, the ROAMER project is evaluating the mobile robot platform as of August 2022 to identify the most effective design depending on several limitations or qualities.

It added: “Autonomous navigation and mapping using the virtually generated environment and the robot’s mapping algorithms are also being done.”
