Gov’t and stakeholders are asked to concentrate on enhancing the PH health system.

The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) urged the government and other interested parties on Wednesday to concentrate on enhancing the nation’s healthcare system.

Following POPCOM’s study of a recent report the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) produced listing the causes of deaths in 2021, this was said.

According to the research, as of May 21, 2022, 146,137 people have died as a result of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), making it the cause of 10,226 recorded deaths as of that date, or 6.5 percent of all registered deaths from January to April 2022.

However, 159,770 additional deaths that were not directly due to Covid-19 but rather were brought on by other diseases that took more lives in 2021 along with the lethal viral infection, were recognized by POPCOM Executive Director Undersecretary Juan Antonio Perez.

He said that among the leading causes of fatalities in the nation were ischemic heart disease (or heart attacks, up 29.7 percent); cerebrovascular illness (or strokes, up 15.3 percent); diabetes mellitus (up 21 percent); and hypertensive disease (or hypertension, up 31.5 percent).

In addition, Perez pointed out that malnutrition-related mortality had increased by 47 percent while neoplasms, or different types of cancer, had decreased by 10.3 percent.

Pareho ito nagpapahiwatig na nagkaroon ng matinding krisis sa sistema ng kalusugan noong nakaraang taon at nararapat lamang na sa mga darating na taon ay susugan natin ng dagdag na resources ang ating sistemang pangkalusu

According to Perez, the PSA adheres to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) reporting requirements for Covid-19 fatalities, which the Department approved of Health in 2020.

According to him, WHO includes both patients with a clinical diagnosis of Covid-19 confirmed by a laboratory test but lack a confirmation test as Covid-19 mortalities.

To help the nation’s healthcare system during his administration, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has committed to advocating for the establishment of a virology center, a disease control center, and specialist hospitals in the regions.
