Extension of the disaster state to increase PH In reply to Covid, DILG
The decision by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to prolong the country’s state of disaster due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic was applauded on Thursday by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. stated in a statement that the three-month extension of the state of calamity would provide the national government and local government units (LGUs) with more time to implement economic, social, and health interventions as Filipinos continue to adjust to the new normal and the challenges brought on by the pandemic.
In a statement, Abalos said, “With this extension, we commit to continue to shepherd our local government units (LGUs) to sustain their efforts in containing and halting the spread of Covid-19 in their respective localities and to ensure the safety and protection of their constituents from the virus.
Additionally, he urged LGUs to expedite their Covid-19 immunization and booster push to “strengthen our nation’s wall of immunity” and use the proper funding, including the Quick Response Fund, to meet the urgent requirements of their residents.
To protect the Filipino people during this “important period,” Abalos added that the DILG would continue to support LGUs in delivering effective, prompt, and appropriate Covid-19 responses and services.
On the advice of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Marcos prolonged the country’s state of calamity from September 13 to December 31 this year in Proclamation No. 57. (NDRRMC).
The President urged all federal agencies and local governments (LGUs) to maintain their mutual assistance and cooperation and to mobilize the resources required to quickly implement critical, urgent, and effective disaster response aid and measures to lessen and ultimately eliminate the threat posed by Covid-19.
