Expert: Covid-19 immunization can be given annually or biannually in PH.

As immunity weakens with time, it may be viable to administer the Covid-19 vaccine annually or twice a year, an infectious disease specialist said on Monday.

Dr. Rontgene Solante stated that the vulnerable population would receive the annual or biannual Covid-19 vaccination as a priority in a televised public briefing.

“First of all, vaccine immunity wanes six to eight months after, so it means there’s still a possibility for us to be infected,” he added. “Secondly, bumababa ang bisa ng bakuna six to eight months after, so, ibig sabihin there’s a possibility na pwede tayo magkahawaan pa rin.”

The word “completely vaccinated,” according to Solante, should be redefined to include more than the first series of the Covid-19 vaccine.

He claimed that the current definition of “completely vaccinated” does not adequately reflect the defense required against the infection and its severe consequences.

I hope this includes the first booster for the general population or the second booster for the vulnerable group with comorbidities and immunocompromised, he said.

Nearly 72.8 million Filipinos had received all of their vaccinations as of September 14. Around 6.8 million of the total population are seniors, followed by more than 9.9 million teenagers and 4.9 million children.

Nearly 2.6 million people have received their second booster dose, while more than 18.7 million have already received their first.
