For PH’s UN Security Council application, PBBM advocates.

On Wednesday (Manila time), President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. requested support from UN members for the Philippines’ bid to serve on the Security Council for 2027–2028.

In a speech at the 77th UNGA session, Marcos made the request, claiming that the Philippines is eligible to be a security council member due to its efforts to promote peace.

“The Security Council’s work can benefit from the peacebuilding and new cooperative routes that my nation has pioneered. And with that in mind, I make a sincere plea for all UN Members to support the Philippines’ bid for a seat on the Security Council for the years 2027–2028, “added he.

International peace and security are essentially the responsibility of the UN Security Council. It takes the initiative in deciding whether there is aggression or a threat to the peace.

Additionally, it urges parties to a dispute to resolve their differences amicably and suggests ways to make adjustments or stipulate settlement terms. In certain circumstances, the security council may levy penalties or even approve using force to preserve or restore world peace and security.

By promoting “inclusive discussion,” Marcos claimed that the nation had successfully brought about “lasting peace and sustainable development” in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

He remarked, “The peace that we have achieved after many decades of strife among warring tribes and clansmen shows that togetherness is achievable even in the most challenging conditions.

In Asia, the Philippines, according to Marcos, also adopts a similar strategy, forming alliances for peace and development through interfaith and interreligious dialogue, particularly in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Marcos stated, “We think that partnerships provide the bridge to unify all of us in fostering peace and stability in the Asia Pacific area in the face of vast variety.

Additionally, Marcos stressed the necessity of reiterating the UN’s commitment to putting an end to violence, upholding justice, respecting human rights, and preserving world peace and security.

He said this while pleading with UN members to address the problem of the spread of all weapons, including light weapons, small guns, and improvised explosive devices.

The decision was taken by Marcos, who regretted that despite efforts to forbid its use, nuclear weapons still pose an “existential menace.”

“Additionally, we must endeavor to maintain the fairness of the international system for all peoples and all states. The most vulnerable individuals in our system, particularly underprivileged immigrants and refugees, must be protected. The enduring impact of immigrants in the fight against this pandemic has been seen by people worldwide, “said he.

Additionally, Marcos aimed to end the “disturbing” instances of bigotry, particularly against Asians.

Using a “constructive strategy that places our people, not our politicians, at the heart of this effort,” he claimed that the Philippines’ United Nations Joint Program on Human Rights is an example of such an approach.

He said it offers a blueprint for reviving the systems that enable cooperation between the UN and a sovereign duty-bearer.

“A strengthened General Assembly that can hold the Security Council accountable and a reformed Security Council that is more inclusive would contribute to our sustained solidarity. The United Nations must continue its enduring legacy of international peacekeeping simultaneously, “Marcos threw in.

Each of the 15 member states of the UN Security Council has one vote.

All UN members are required by the Charter to abide by Council decisions.

China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States make up the council’s five permanent members.

The current members are Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates.

2005 saw the Philippines’ most recent election to the council.
