PH will be a “moderately rich” country by 2040: PBBM

On Wednesday (Manila time), President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. voiced optimism that the Philippines will achieve “moderate prosperity” by 2040.

Before the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, Marcos stated that despite obstacles posed by the Covid-19 outbreak and global economic turmoil, the Philippines is still “on pace” to achieve upper middle-income status by next year.

In the previous thirty years, he pointed out; the nation has made great progress toward sustainable development.

By 2040, we want to be a fairly successful nation thanks to consistent investment in public health, education, and other social services, including food [security]. I have faith that we will realize this vision, he continued.

He added that higher targets would necessitate UN support for the Philippines.

“No country is an island. For our national goals to be realized, the world must be conducive to the peaceful development of all nations, including our own. The United Nations must carry on its task for us. And the Philippines is committed to contributing to that solution,” he said.

He also emphasized the “different” that multilateralism and international collaboration may make by mentioning the Philippines’ contribution to the COVAX Facility for Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access.

Marcos also mentioned how Filipino health professionals were on the front lines in many nations to stop the spread of Covid-19, often at the cost of their own lives.

According to Marcos, it is up to the heads of state to “move” and “shape” the world’s changes.

The choice to travel into the future as separate nations or as a world in peace is ours. I believe that all nations should face the difficulties faced by one person. And in that sense, our success as a group will be reflected in the achievement of one,” he remarked.

He reiterated his call for international harmony.

“The people of the world turn to us, our leaders, to realize these hopes for the future. We can’t let them down. And if we work together, we won’t let them down. Together, we have the best chance of success. Together, let’s dream and fight toward those triumphs for all of our nations, he continued.

Last month, Marcos said that the PHP5.3 trillion projected national budget for 2023, which his government calls the “Agenda for Prosperity,” is based on a set of mid-term macroeconomic and fiscal goals.

With PHP852.8 billion, the proposed budget gave the most money to the education sector, followed by PHP718.4 billion for public works, PHP296.3 billion for health, PHP197 billion for social welfare and development, and PHP852.8 billion for agriculture (PHP184.1 billion).

From September 18 to 24, Marcos will be in the US on a working visit.

He met with the Filipino community in New Jersey on Monday (Manila time), then on Tuesday (Manila time), he went to the New York Stock Exchange Business Forum.
