In an endeavor to one day save the Earth, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully crashed a spaceship into an asteroid on Monday night.

The US space agency broadcast the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) live to the public to demonstrate its planetary defense test in the event an asteroid heads toward our planet in the future.

The deliberate collision took seven years to plan. NASA tried to determine whether it could physically steer a space probe to strike an asteroid and alter its course to avoid a potentially devastating impact on Earth.

Moments after the spacecraft successfully impacted the asteroid, DART lead scientist Nancy Chabot said, “Wow, that was wonderful, wasn’t it?”

The DART mission was launched in November last year from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base. 6.5 million miles (10.5 million km) out from Earth, on Monday night, mission controllers manually directed the spacecraft to drive itself into the asteroid known as Dimorphos.

Special cameras from an Italian space probe captured the cosmic encounter as the spacecraft slammed into the asteroid at a blazing 15,000 mph (24,140 km/h) speed.

According to Chabot, we had never seen anything like this technical demonstration hit a little asteroid in such a spectacular way.

If scientists can detect an asteroid on a collision course with Earth long enough in advance, they may be able to manually deflect it from hitting the planet, according to NASA.

Scientists will now examine the data from the hit using telescope records of the collision to see whether the impact changed the asteroid’s track.

No known asteroid larger than 450 feet (137 meters) across has a high risk of colliding with Earth in the next 100 years, according to NASA.
