Towns affected by the Davao Oro Fusarium wilt receive Biocon labs.
To battle the Panama disease or Fusarium wilt and increase high-quality banana output in the province, the regional office of the Department of Agriculture (DA-11) donated laboratory equipment worth PHP 2.9 million to three municipalities in Davao de Oro.
The provincial administration announced on Wednesday that on September 29, three Trichoderma village-level biological control (Biocon) laboratory facilities, along with supplies and materials, were sent to the towns of Maragusan, Mabini, and Laak, which are affected by Fusarium wilt.
The primary supplier of pure culture Biocon products, Davao de Oro Farm in Barangay Pasian Monkayo town, upgraded its tissue culture laboratory as part of the changeover.
According to the statement, “Such provisions include the laboratory apparatus, chemicals, and the proposal to build an additional building for the laboratory that is set to rise once approved.”
The DA-11 Banana Industry Development Program supports the initiative, which aims to boost the production of Trichoderma and other Biocon goods known as Fusarium wilt-resistant.
A pathogen that lives in the soil and is attracted to banana plants is Fusarium wilt. It may remain dormant for between 30 and 50 years.
Its fungi obstruct the vascular system of plants, robbing them of essential minerals, nutrients, and moisture, turning them yellow till they perish.
According to Marilou Infante, director of the DA-11 regional crop protection center, the project would rehabilitate contaminated banana fields in the province.
Farmers will be able to cultivate Biocon products that would stop and manage the spread of the illness thanks to an accessible Trichoderma village-level laboratory, she said.
“A helpful fungus called Trichoderma fights Fusarium wilt. According to our research, if you use it once a week, you can cure the sickness, “said Infante.
According to her, the laboratories will help the banana farmers and other small-scale farming operations in the area.
