The government now has additional power against cybercriminals because of the SIM registration law.

According to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the recently passed law requiring the registration of subscriber identity module (SIM) cards would improve the capabilities of law enforcement authorities to combat cybercriminals.

Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. said in a statement that Republic (RA) Act 11934, also known as the SIM Card Registration Act, is a welcome development in fostering “accountability at all levels” and lowering the number of anonymous, electronic communication-enabled crimes that are being committed.

The Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies will be able to quickly respond to complaints and cases involving mobile scams thanks to the new law because it will make it simple for them to find offenders and end misconduct involving telecommunications devices, according to Abalos.

Through this law, the DILG, to carry out its mandate to uphold peace and order and defend the populace from criminals “in both offline and online realm,” can better directly affiliate agencies and local government units (LGUs) to adapt to the needs of the digital world, according to Abalos.

The implementation of the new law will be supported by the DILG, its affiliated agencies, and regional offices, he declared, keeping in mind the interests of the Filipino people.

The first piece of legislation passed by the Marcos government was RA 11934. On October 8, two days after reaching his 100th day in office, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed it.

In a speech, Marcos congratulated senators and representatives for coming up with the “long overdue” legislation that aims to use SIM cards to solve crimes.

Marcos hoped that his administration would take additional steps to ensure the country’s safety, development, and prosperity and its citizens.
