Bicol rice farmers acquire new skills.

At least 370 Bicol farmers attended the “Lakbay Palay” event on Tuesday at the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) compound here with the theme “Bukid Tipid Tips, Subukan,” where they picked up new knowledge and skills to help them equip and get ready for their rice farming strategies as the wet season begins!

The “Lakbay Palay” intends to exhibit to farmers several rice types that may be used to adapt in their fields and technology that would boost their rice yield while lowering production expenses, according to Dr. Victoria C. Lapitan, director of PhilRice Bicol.

To share information and strategies the participants may utilize, she added, “we also invited specialists for inbred and hybrid rice types and features, abonong swak, (and) insect management.”

In an interview, Sazy A. Lactao from the Lapafara Irrigators Association Inc. in Barangay Lahong Bulan, Sorsogon, stated that the training is essential for more information on what to utilize that would be advantageous for their ricefields.

As an officer in our organization, I can use what I’ve learned here to instruct my members on how to maintain their rice fields. He added that I also urged my colleagues to adopt new technologies, particularly equipment that would facilitate our work.

According to Lapitan, farmers were allowed to multiply golden rice seedlings since Catanduanes is one of the seven pilot provinces chosen in the nation to become priority locations for the golden rice initiative.

She stated that they wanted to give the seeds to the intended recipients and seed growers, who would then generate additional seeds, after purchasing them back for the next season.

By November, which is National Rice Awareness Month, Lapitan said they would also run a feeding program in Catanduanes using golden rice.

According to PhilRice, golden rice can provide young children with 30 to 50 percent of their estimated daily requirements for vitamin A when it is included in the diet.

Beta-carotene has been added to the grains in these foods to combat vitamin A deficiency, which can result in a weakened immune system, delayed cognitive development, and poor eyesight.

Lapitan reassured the populace that adding beta-carotene to the grains makes golden rice safe for consumption.
