As mandated by Republic Act 11203, also known as the Rice Tariffication Law, more than 44,948 farmers in Albay and Sorsogon have begun to receive PHP5,000 in monetary support each from the Department of Agriculture (DA) (RTL).

In an interview on Wednesday, Rose Belodo, the officer in charge of the Albay Provincial Agriculture Office (APAO), stated that farmers who own rice fields of two hectares or less and who are registered with the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture are the beneficiaries of the cash assistance (RSBA).

According to her, there are 26,798 farmer-beneficiaries in Albay. The first group received were farmers from Legazpi City, Manito, Rapu-Rapu, and Sto. Domingo, while Camalig continued to be the site of continuous distribution.

By October 21, according to Belodo, they want to have distributed all of the monetary assistance throughout the province.

She added that one of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s top priorities for the country’s agriculture sector was to provide cash support to farmers.

According to Relodo, “The Rice Farmers Financial Assistance (RFFA) program of the DA is anticipated to cushion the impact of the high production cost that significantly damaged the farmers’ farming activities.”

The APAO chief added that a series of talks are currently being held with local government representatives in high-risk municipalities near Mayon Volcano to ascertain the number of farmers impacted if alert status increases to level 3.

We are awaiting the report from the city agriculture offices outlining how many farmers, animals, and crops would be impacted.

If Mount Mayon erupts, she continued, animals, particularly livestock, will be evacuated in advance.

Around 18,150 qualified farmers in Sorsogon began receiving a PHP5,000 cash grant.

The Sorsogon Provincial Information Office stated that the cash assistance payout began on October 11 and ran through October 20.
