Batangas Solon urges DOH to assist in curbing the HFMD outbreak

Representative Gerville Luistro of the Batangas 2nd District requested assistance from the Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday to control the Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) epidemic among schoolchildren in several barangays in San Pascual, Batangas.

“Kami ay nanawagan kay Ma. Rosario Vergeire, OIC Secretary of the Department of Health, na bigyang pansin ang outbreak na ito. Pinagmulan nito ay alamin sa DOH. Up to this point, you are still in a good state of mind. It is up to the DOH Officer-in-Charge Vergeire to check into this outbreak and to “mapagpatuloy” the outbreak that is now occurring in the affected population. We sincerely hope that the DOH will track the outbreak’s origin and assist in swiftly ending it. This will stop it from spreading to neighboring places, preventing further disruption of lessons, Luistro stated in a statement to the media.

Following the HFMD infection of over 100 children in San Pascual town, the novice lawmaker took the decision.

Mayor of San Pascual Antonio Dimayuga issued an executive order due to the epidemic suspending school for kids in daycare through third grade in the eight seriously afflicted barangays from October 18 to October 21.

Luistro pointed out that while HFMD may not be as severe as Covid-19, it is still extremely contagious (as demonstrated in San Pascual, where the number of cases exploded in a matter of days) and may lead to consequences that may even be fatal.

Children frequently contract HFMD, an infectious disease typically conveyed through direct contact with secretions, such as saliva, from sick people. Fever, uncomfortable mouth sores, rash, and blisters on the hands, feet, and buttocks are some of its symptoms. However, problems such as viral encephalitis, paralysis, and meningitis are highly unusual to develop.

While waiting for the DOH to take action, Luistro stated that his office had already sent help to the families of the affected children.

Napakabigat ang magkaroon ng panibagong dagok na nangangahulugan ng karagdagdang gastusin at pasakit, lalo na sa mga panahong ito. It is a tremendous blow to be slammed with new burdens and expenses, especially in these times, so that’s what I’m saying with my example: “Especially in these times, it is a big blow to be hit with additional burdens and expenses.” Because of this, our agency immediately dispatched aid to the impacted families, according to Luistro.
