Quiapo Church is designated as an archdiocesan shrine.
The Quiapo Church, also known as the St. John the Baptist Parish, has been elevated to the rank of the archdiocesan shrine.
This occurred after Fr. Rufino Sescon Jr., the parish’s rector, received approval from Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula for his appeal.
In a proclamation dated May 10, the Manila archbishop stated, “We hereby decree that the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene – St. John the Baptist Parish (Quiapo Church) be conferred the title of the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Black Nazarene.”
The Archdiocesan Shrine of the Black Nazarene is also given all the rights and privileges outlined in the statutes that we also approved at the same time by this Decree of Erection, he said.
Fr. Reginald Malicdem, the vicar general of the archdiocese, officiated during a Mass on Wednesday, during which the new status of the Quiapo Church was revealed.
The priest mentioned in his homily that it has been “long overdue” for the parish to be designated as an archdiocesan shrine.
However, he continued, “For us followers, whether a formal statement is made or not, this church is a real shrine because here we experience the presence of God.
The Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene’s St. John the Baptist Parish (Quiapo Church) and the Presbyteral Council were consulted before the petition’s merits were approved.
A church must be a place of historical significance, prayer, and pilgrimage for a particular purpose of piety to qualify as a diocesan shrine.
A parish submits a petition to the bishop requesting that the church be canonically elevated.
The Black Nazarene statue is located in the Quiapo Church. Millions of people, mostly believers, attend its yearly procession, which is conducted every January 9.
Because of its significance in fostering a strong popular devotion to Jesus Christ and its cultural contribution to the Filipinos’ religiosity, St. John Paul II elevated the church as the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in 1987.
