OFW deployment to Ukraine has been halted by the POEA.
MANILA, Philippines โ Due to tensions between the host country and Russia, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said on Monday that the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Ukraine has been halted.
“Because the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) has raised the alert level in Ukraine to Alert Level 4, and because Ukraine is at Alert Level 4, the POEA governing board issued a statement on Wednesday saying that no one will be allowed to leave or work in Ukraine,” said POEA chief Bernard Olalia at the Laging Handa briefing.
Only a few OFWs work in the European country, according to Olalia.
“Because of Alert Level 2, we stopped sending OFWs to Ukraine in 2014.” “Returning workers are the only OFWs who are allowed there,” Olalia explained.
“There were no returning workers in 2021, although there were four in 2020, and 12 in 2019.” He went on to say, “They are our domestic employees as well as skilled and professional workers.”
“As long as there is conflict,” he stated, the deployment prohibition will remain in place.
“If the uncertainty persists, our alert level will remain unchanged, as will the deployment ban,” he added.
Almost all of the land-based workers have been evacuated, according to Olalia, with the exception of those married to Ukrainians.
“Right now, our challenge is the over 200 seafarers who are still on board,” he continued, “but we are now negotiating their repatriation utilizing the humanitarian corridor, as we call it.”
He also stated that the government is willing to assist returning OFWs in finding new jobs abroad, whether through an agency or direct employment.
“Agency hires will just come here to POEA and we will look for job orders, match their talents and expertise with the available job orders, and coordinate with the licensed recruitment agencies here,” Olalia explained.
“For direct hires, we will assist them in processing their direct hire application if they have relatives or know employers abroad who are eager to recruit them,” he added.
