DESCRIPTION: On the outskirts of Stone Town, on the beach, is a magnficent botanical garden, popular with romantics. Within this spectacular and secluded setting lies the Protea Hotel Mbweni Ruins, 7km south of Stone Town, offering easy access to spice plantations, the Jozani Forest and East Coast beaches.

Protea Hotel Mbweni Ruins magically blends the living experience of Zanzibar`s historic past with modern-day luxury and comfort. Here, the weary visitor can relax and pamper themselves whilst enjoying nature`s true beauty.

Accommodation is exclusive (no more than 30 GUESTS), with breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and the gardens, which are home to a vast variety of birds and butterflies, before leading down to the beach where mangroves sprout out from the sea. Facilities include a beautiful swimming pool and a bar and restaurant on the clifftop, overlooking the ocean

LOCATION: Just 6kms from Zanzibar Stone Town and the Harbour, only 3.5km from the airport. Easy access to spice plantations and East Coast beaches.

Directions - from the Airport:

»» Turn left at the Police Station (from the airport road) toward the sea.
»» Turn right when you see the Protea Hotel Mbweni Ruins sign.
»» Pass the church on the right and, after a bend to the right,
»» Turn left at the end of the road. You will pass the ruins
    to reach the entrance to the hotel.

From the city:
- Turn right at the Police Station (to the airport road) toward the sea and follow directions as above.

ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation comprises 13 luxurious, air-conditioned rooms (9 deluxe, 1 suite and 3 family rooms) with views of the Indian Ocean and the garden.

Each room is furnished in distinctive Zanzibari style, with oriental rugs, mosquito nets and four-poster beds, which echo the cultural flavours that have influenced the Swahili Coast.

Each room is situated in a picturesque setting dotted with palm trees and an kaleidoscope of exotic plant life, ehile each suite is located close to the swimming pool and secluded beach, with a balcony overlooking the sea.

Facilities include: Hairdryer on request - Shower - Tea/coffee making facilities and writing desk. Suites and family rooms also have a fridge. Non-smoking rooms are available on request.

FACILITIES: The Sundowner Bar offers spectacular sunsets over G&Ts or traditional punch, a variety of East African beers and cocktails, as well as some South African wines. The Raintree Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a traditional colonial-style curry buffet lunch on Sundays. Table d`hote menus incorporate European cuising with Zanzibar spice and flair. Afternoon tea is served at 4.00 p.m. daily.

The Mbweni Gardens have exotic and indigenous plant species attracting interesting animals and birdlife. A nature trail winds through the garden to areas of historical interest, while the paths have plants labelled on the way. The gardens have a superb collection of palms (over 150 varieties) and form a haven of peace and tranquility, with viewpoints and quiet corners in which to relax and enjoy the unique environment.
