Concerts at Five
August 10 1983, the Johann-Michael-Haydn-Society was founded. Its main aim has always been that of a museum that shows the importance of Michael Haydn’s life and work as a leading musician in Salzburg between the years 1763 and 1806. Additionally, the society organizes recitals with young musicians and supports research work on the Music History of Salzburg, which is published in a musicological series called “Denkmäler der Musik in Salzburg”.

Getreidegasse
Also known as Grain Laneis a busy shopping street in the Old Town section of Salzburg. The house at no. 9 Getreidegasse is where the famed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born and lived until he was 17. Originally called Trabegasse (derived from Traben - to trot) its name was changed several times to create the odd Cereal Street. It is a law in Salzburg to designate shops by hanging iron signs over the shop, making this street unique of its kind. It is in this street where you can see daily the famous puppet woman, who sells puppets since 1987, standing on the street with her brown basket.

The Getreidegasse was recently selected as the main motif of a very high value collectors' coin: the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart commemorative coin, minted in February 1, 2006. The obverse shows a view of down the Getreidegasse. In the foreground is the house where Mozart was born, while the Getreidegasse stretches off back to the right.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road
A panoramic road in Austria in the state of Salzburg. It connects the state of Salzburg with the state of Carinthia. It is named after the Großglockner, Austria's highest mountain.

Festung Hohensalzburg / High Salzburg Fortress
A castle in the Austrian city of Salzburg. It sits on Festungsberg hill. With a length of 250 meters and a width of 150 meters, it is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe.

Krimml Falls / Krimmler Wasserfälle
A total height of 380 meters (1,247 feet), is the second highest waterfall in Austria. The falls are formed from the Krimmler Ache river and are located near the village of Krimml in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Marionette Opera
A Marionette is a puppet controlled from above using strings; a marionette's puppeteer is called a manipulator. Marionettes are operated with the puppeteer hidden or revealed to an audience by using a vertical or horizontal control bar in different forms of theatres or entertainment venues. They have also been used in films and on television.

Salzburg Marionette Theatre was established in 1913 and is one of the oldest continuing marionette theatres in the world. It is based in the city of Salzburg, Austria . Original productions featured live actors and musicians. Today soundtracks are recorded. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre performs a large repertoire of operas, ballets and productions for children, using marionettes.

Mirabell Park and Garden
The world-famous Mirabell Gardens were built along a north-south axis and oriented towards the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Salzburger Dom cathedral. The original gardens were re-modelled according to plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach under the reign of Prince Archbishop Johann Ernst Thun in 1689.

Mozart’s Birthplace Museum
A museum in his birthplace now hosts precious relics such as the violin that Mozart used to play when he was a child, the time of baby Mozart, his concert violin, his Clavichord, portraits, letters and other memorabilia of the Mozart family. Some famous paintings of Mozart are also on display, such as “Mozart on the piano”, an unfinished painting by his brother in law Joseph Lange.

St. Peter’s Abbey
A high-Romanesque, decorated with Baroque elements in the early 17th century under Abbot Beda Seeauer. It is one of the many buildings in Salzburg that contains elements from Romanesque to Rococo Style. The first church on this site was probably built shortly after the death of St. Rupert, but only the ground floor of the Western tower remains from this building. After the fire of 1127, the current basilica was built under Abbot Balderich around 1130.

Salzburg Cathedral
A 17th century baroque cathedral in the city of Salzburg, dedicated to Saint Rupert of Salzburg. It is the site of Mozart's baptism. The site occupied by the Salzburg Cathedral was probably a sacred place for sacrifices in Celtic as well as Roman times. The first cathedral was built under Saint Vergilius of Salzburg, who might have used foundations by St. Rupert. The first Dom was recorded in 774.

The so-called Virgil Dom was built from 767 to 774 and was 66 metres long and 33 metres wide. Archbishop Arno (785 – 821) was the first to arrange renovations of the Dom, which was in place for less than 70 years. In 842, the building burned down after being struck by lightning. Three years later, the re-erection of the building started.

Salzburg Festival
A prominent festival of music and drama. It is held each summer within the Austrian town of Salzburg, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In modern time there is also an annual Salzburg Easter Festival held by the same organization.

Salzburg Residenz
The Salzburger Dom, the Residenz Palace is probably the most important historic building of Salzburg. This Baroque palace was the official residence of the Prince Archbishops of Salzburg until it was secularised and became part of Austria. Formally simply a bishop’s palace stood on the location of today’s Residenz since about 1120. This court was altered repeatedly in the 15th and 16th century. The current building is mostly what Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau started around 1600, when he performed major changes of the original Residenz buildings.

Universitaet Mozarteum Salzburg / Mozarteum University of Salzburg
The University of Music and Dramatic Arts Mozarteum Salzburg honours the Austrian city's most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The predecessor of the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg was the "Cathedral Music Association and Mozarteum,” founded in 1841 through the energies of Mozart's widow Constanze Weber Mozart with its stated purpose the “refinement of musical taste with regard to sacred music as well as concerts.” Through the 19th century the concerts of the orchestra, officially named the Mozarteum Orchestra in 1908, became the center of Salzburg’s musical life. The year 1908 also happened to be the year the famous and widely recorded conductor Herbert Von Karajan was born, and who was also born in Salzburg and studied at the Mozarteum.

Hellbrunn Palace
It was built between 1613 and 1615. It is a rectangular court with two pavilions on the front corner. The three storeys are divided in the façade by so-called “Kordongesimse” decorations. A long alley connects Hellbrunn with the city of Salzburg. A double-sided stairway in the front leads to the central main gate of Schloss Hellbrunn. Under this staircase you will find a grotto - fountain by Santino Solari. On the first floor of Hellbrunn palace, you will find the remarkable “Fürstenzimmer” or “Prince’s chambers”, most significant the “Festsaal”.

Liechtensteinklamm / Liechtenstein Gorge
A narrow gorge with walls up to 300m high, located in the Austrian Alps 50km south of Salzburg. It is around 4km long and named after Johann II of Liechtenstein who had the walkways installed in 1875.

Untersbergbahn Cable Car
Offers a great variety of hiking trails, the cable-car operating all year, a ski-run, a biking round trip, demanding climbing routes, charming ice caves, and comfortable shelters. The magic of the landscape is the attracting factor.

Salzkammergut
A resort area located in Austria. It stretches from City of Salzburg to the Dachstein mountain range, spanning the federal states of Upper Austria (80%), Salzburg (7%), and Styria (13%). The main river of the region is the Traun, a tributary of the Danube. The name Salzkammergut means "Estate of the Salt Chamber" and derives from the Imperial Salt Chamber, the authority charged with running the precious salt mines in the Habsburg empire.

The Salzkammergut offers many opportunities to take part in water sports, bathing, hiking, cycling and golf as well as relaxing around lakes such as the Grundlsee or Toplitzsee. The Katrinalm, an alpine pasture, is found near Bad Ischl.
