The red tide advisory is still in effect in some of the coastal waters of Bohol, Samar, Zamboanga del Sur, and Surigao del Sur, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

The Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) or toxic red tide that is above the regulatory limit is still present in shellfish samples taken and tested from coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol and San Pedro Bay in Samar, according to a shellfish bulletin released late on Wednesday by BFAR Director Demosthenes Escoto.

In Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur and Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur, a red tide advisory is still in effect.

Escoto warned that alamang and all kinds of shellfish collected from these places are harmful to consume.

Escoto stated that fish, squid, shrimp, and crabs are safe for human eating if they are fresh, fully cleaned, and deveined of internal organs like gills and intestines before cooking.

According to BFAR, “red tide” characterizes the coastal phenomena where an abundance of algae stains the water.

“Red tides are almost always bad because they affect the environment, living things, and people. Some produce strong poisons significant to the population, while others cause widespread fish mortality or fish kills,” it stated.
