The Department of Health (DOH) revealed Wednesday that out of 714 samples sequenced last January 14, 492 new instances of the Omicron form of the coronavirus were discovered.

The DOH reported 115 instances are positive for the Delta variation and one case is positive for the Alpha variant in a joint statement with the University of the Philippines – Philippine Genome Center (UP-PGC) and the University of the Philippines – National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH).

There were 332 local cases and 160 returning overseas Filipinos in the Omicron cases (ROFs).

There were 227 cases in the National Capital Region; 76 cases in Region 4-A (Calabarzon); 11 cases in Central Luzon; 5 cases in Central Visayas; two cases each in Cagayan Valley, Western Visayas, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and the Cordillera Administrative Region; and one case each in Ilocos Region, Region 4-B (Mimaropa), and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindan

Three cases are still active, two cases have died, and 467 cases have been labeled as recovered, according to the Department of Health. The outcomes of 20 instances are still being confirmed.

There have been 535 verified Omicron variant cases so far.

There were 115 additional Delta variant cases, 88 of which were local cases and 27 of which were ROFs.

There are presently 3,170 Alpha variant cases in all.

Due to the high transmissibility of the Omicron form and the increasing number of Covid-19 cases, the DOH recommended the public implement protective health practices and adhere to basic public health standards.

“New policies based on science and data were put in place to limit the hazards of the Omicron form,” it stated, citing shortened booster shot intervals, youth vaccination, shortened quarantine, or isolation durations for fully vaccinated HCWs without symptoms, and focused testing as examples.
