MANILA, Philippines — The country’s coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccination program would continue during the elections, according to Secretary Vince Dizon, the President’s Adviser on Covid-19 Response.

Dizon said the local government units (LGUs) have realized the need to maintain the large immunization program while the election campaign is ongoing during President Rodrigo Duterte’s pre-recorded Talk to the People, which aired Tuesday night.

As a result, the National Task Force (NTF) against Covid-19 lead implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. and Health Secretary Francisco Duque III requested that all vaccination efforts and other vaccination-related activities be exempted from the vote prohibition by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

“Puwede pong tuloy-tuloy ang bakuna kahit na po nagsimula na ang local campaign sa ating mga probinsiya, sa atin pong mga cities and municipalities,” says the speaker. Very crucial, Mayor, because if nangangampanya ang ating mga opisyales ay hindi po dapat huminto ang pagbabakuna. “It’s critical, Mayor, that even while our officials are campaigning, the immunization process is not impeded),” Dizon said Duterte.

Dizon stated that the NTF and health authorities are making every effort to enhance vaccine coverage across the country, particularly in places where the target population is still lagging.

“Sa ngayon po (So far), most of the country’s major cities have already met their targets of fully vaccinating 70% of the target population and 70% of the elderly, ‘yun pong mga senior citizens natin ay fully vaccinated (70 percent of our senior citizens are already fully vaccinated),” he added.

The government is now concentrating its immunization efforts in the Bicol region’s island provinces, as well as other places in Palawan, Marinduque, Romblon, Mindoro Oriental, and Mindoro Occidental.
