Senator who is seeking re-election asks for a moratorium on the increase in PhilHealth premiums.

MANILA, Philippines β€” Senator-elect JV Ejercito stated on Monday that he will suggest to President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. that the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation’s (PhilHealth) scheduled premium rate hike this month be postponed.

In a moment of crisis, Ejercito believes it is wrong to impose any premium increases on workers.

“Ang sitwasyon noon ay normal. Ang takbo ng ekonomiya napakaganda. In the Philippines, hindi lang ng buong mundo, kaya ang mga calculations niyan ay predicated doon sa sitwasyon ng panahon na’yun (At the time, the situation was typical.) The Philippines’ and world’s economies were performing well at the time, and the calculations were based on that fact.) “In an interview with GMA 7’s “Unang Balita,” he remarked.

The rise in PhilHealth premiums is required by Republic Act (RA) 11223 or the Universal Health Care Act, which was drafted by Ejercito during his previous Senate term and signed into law in 2019.

“All direct contributors are hereby advised that the premium rate for Calendar Year 2022 is 4.0 percent, with an income floor of PHP10,000.00 and an income ceiling of PHP80,000.00 effective January 2022,” according to Section 10 of RA 11223 and PhilHealth Circular No. 2020-0005 on the Premium Contribution Schedule in the National Health Insurance Program.

According to Ejercito, the country and the rest of the world were not prepared for the Covid-19 outbreak, thus the government must adjust to the situation.

He went on to say that it is his job and responsibility to investigate the Universal Health Care Act and ensure that it is properly implemented.

“It’s a work in progress, so it’s my top goal to tutukan ito na maayos. If there are any adjustments needed due to the second or third year of implementation, ay ako na mismo ang maghahain ng (This is a work in progress, therefore making sure it’s corrected is my top priority.) Because it is yet in its second or third year of implementation, if any changes are required, I will file the amendments myself “Ejercito remarked.

Ejercito will chair the Committees on Local Government and Higher Education in the 19th Congress, according to presumptive Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, the chair of the Committee on Health and Demography, said in a statement that he does not want the PhilHealth price hike to increase the burden on Filipinos who are still dealing with the pandemic.

“Balansehin ninyo lahat ninyo. Itong maging pabigat sa mga mahihirap ninyong pag-aralan ninyong mabuti at sana po ay huwag po itong maging pabigat sa mga mahihirap. (Balance it all first.) kaya pa naman po ng PhilHealth at sana ay bigyan po ninyo ng palugit Examine it properly, and hopefully it will not be a financial burden to the poor. PhilHealth is still capable, and it may be able to provide an extension), “During a recent visit to fire victims in Navotas City, he said this.

PhilHealth promised members in a statement released last month that increased payments will assist lessen the burden of hospitalization and enhancing other services.

“PhilHealth assures its members that the statutorily mandated contribution schedule will continue to provide enough financial protection against hospitalization expenditures for all Filipinos,” it stated.
