The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced during the registration period’s deadline on Tuesday that young people between the ages of 15 and 30 make up the bulk of those who applied to become new voters.

“As of today, more or less 1.5 to 1.6 million people have applied for registration, exceeding our goal. The registration will no longer be extended as a result. More than half of the 1.6 million are young people who have registered. In an interview, while visiting the satellite registration hub at SM City Manila, Comelec head George Erwin Garcia remarked, “That shows young people listened to our call to register.

He stated that it is a really positive development that more young Filipinos are participating in the voting process.

“It’s incredibly encouraging for our nation. The next generation is making its presence known because they want to decide how the Filipino race will develop. Our future is now certain, he continued.

Following the registration period, the Election Registration Board (ERB) in various regions of the nation will examine and approve the applications, according to Garcia.

We have already begun producing 91 million votes, and we anticipate finishing the printing by the second week of February, “if the ERB’s approval of the additional voters is accomplished. The voter registration process will continue on December 12, 2022, Garcia said, adding that if the ERBs are completed and the 1.5 to 1.6 million applications are authorized, we will add more ballots. We might finish printing (by) the first week of March.

Aside from requests to register as new voters, the election body also collects requests to reactivate, transfer registration, and correct entries, among other requests.
