600 Nueva Ecija farmers would profit from a new center for the cold storage of onions.
As part of the government’s ongoing efforts to aid farmers in reducing their post-harvest losses, another onion cold storage facility will be constructed in the province of Nueva Ecija.
Up to 60,000 bags of onions can be stored in the facility that will be built in the Talavera town district’s Barangay Bantug.
The Department of Agriculture’s Philippine Rural Development Project will pay for the around PHP125 million project.
On Wednesday, local officials officially broke ground for the building.
In support of the farmers who are frequently compelled to sell their produce even at a low price due to a lack of post-harvest facilities, Bernie Valdez, chief of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, stated on Thursday that the construction of the onion cold storage is in response to the request of the local government unit of Talavera.
“The government is trying to bring this kind of project in the province in response to the call of the onion farmers who are frequently forced to sell their yields even at a loss due to lack of storage facility,” Valdez said in a local radio interview.
The 600 farmers who are members of the Bantug Agricultural Multi-Purpose Cooperative, according to Talavera Mayor Nerito Santos, would benefit from this facility, which is the first onion cold storage facility built in their community.
“This is quite helpful for the onion growers. This is unquestionably for onion producers. Halimbawa kung mura ang sibuyas pwede po nila itong ilagay sa ating cold storage at kung mataas na ang presyo ng sibuyas ay pwede nila ilabas at ibenta. For instance, if the price of onions is low, they can store them in our cold storage and then remove them and sell their produce when the price rises),” Santos added.
Within six months, the cold storage facility’s construction should be completed.
In the province this month, a third cold storage facility for onions has begun construction.
The Calancuasan Sur Farmers Association will benefit from one in Cuyapo town, while the San Vicente Alintutuan Irrigators Association will benefit from the other, which is located in Laur town.
