Marcos to address comments made by Chinese envoy on the safety of OFWs in Taiwan
On Wednesday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. declared his intention to speak with Huang Xilian, the Chinese ambassador to the Philippines, to clarify his comments regarding the safety of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Taiwan.
Given that English is not the ambassador’s first language, Marcos said in a chance interview in Bulacan that there may have been some “lost in translation” in Huang’s remarks about the OFWs in Taiwan.
Amidst escalating cross-strait tensions, the Chinese envoy previously “advised” Manila to resist “Taiwan independence” if it sincerely cares about the 150,000 Filipinos who labor there.
“I’ll soon be speaking with the Ambassador. And he will be, I’m certain. He’ll undoubtedly be eager to explain what he was trying to communicate in his own words, Marcos predicted.
“We were all a little surprised, but I just put it down to the difference in language,” he continued.
In light of the tension between China and Taiwan, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported on Tuesday that no Filipino had as of yet requested government assistance for repatriation in Taiwan.
Eduardo Jose de Vega, the Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs, reassured lawmakers and the general public in the Philippines that all locations with a significant concentration of Filipino workers, including Taiwan, have long had emergency measures in place.
The promise followed Huang’s comments from last Monday, in which he alleged that the US intended to use the new sites under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) to meddle in the situation in the Taiwan Strait.
National Security Advisor Eduardo M. Ao personally gave the Chinese ambassador assurances during their meeting last week that the additional EDCA sites are intended to safeguard China’s territorial integrity rather than conduct offensive operations against it or meddle in the Taiwan dispute.
He reassured Huang that the Philippines is committed to the peaceful settlement of the Taiwan dispute and to the region’s ongoing stability.
Ao added that the EDCA sites were chosen in accordance with the Strategic Basing Plan of the Philippine Armed Forces (AFP).
Based on the need for strategic basing and AFP development, the country of Philippines has picked EDCA sites that it wishes to further expand.
Jonathan Malaya, spokesperson and associate director general of the National Security Council, had stated that the choice was made by the AFP and not the US.
