PCIEERD advises the government to use a local air quality device.
Before awarding Environmental Compliance Certificates (ECC) to enterprises, the Philippine Council for Industry Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) pleads with the government to employ a locally made air quality monitoring device.
PCIEERD is pressing the government to consider the Robust Optical Aerosol Monitor (ROAM), made in the Philippines, and is advocating for the standard use of air quality monitoring equipment for industries that release significant amounts of particulate matter into the air.
Enrico Paringit, executive director of PCIEERD, told the Philippine News Agency that all of the air quality monitoring equipment utilized as a requirement for the issue of ECC was imported.
“We expect that LGUs (local government units) and communities would quickly adopt ROAM as they work toward becoming smart cities. According to him, a city’s sustainability and environmental stewardship are reflected in the air quality, as he stated in an interview on Thursday.
According to Paringit, ROAM could make technology accessible, reasonable, and quick for monitoring and comprehending air quality issues in fast urbanizing locations.
“The prospective user can opt for a locally made, reasonably reliable, cost-effective (device) if the cost is a constraint,” he said.
According to PCIEERD, researchers from the University of the Philippines – Diliman created ROAM to track air quality and particulate matter (PM) concentrations. To measure the amount of PM in the air, it uses laser light and a camera to capture photos of particles up to PM2.5.
The instrument can also measure temperature and humidity over five minutes.
According to PCIEERD, 10 ROAM units were produced nationwide. When the Taal Volcano erupted in 2021, the gadget was tested in the Batangas towns of Agoncillo and Alfonso.
The Council is asking LGUs to equip local businesses with the resources they need to generate ROAM and to support the technology’s commercialization.
