Following the easing of restrictions from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) protocols, an official said that tourism in the Northern Mindanao Region increased by 177% last year.

According to Mylah Faye Aurora Cario, director of the region’s National Economic Development Authority (NEDA-10), the remarkable accomplishment can be ascribed to “revenge travels” or the rush of tourists who have returned to the area.

“The region’s annual tourist arrivals, domestic and foreign, in 2022 increased by 177% to 1.66 million from 599,000 in 2021,” Cario stated.

According to Cario, the ongoing relaxation of mobility constraints brought on by the pandemic also enhanced demand for travel and tourism-related businesses in the area.

The author cited the growth of Northern Mindanao’s economy in 2017 as evidence of the area’s “further recovery from the pandemic and its resilience amid external headwinds.”

The Northern Mindanao services sector saw growth of 10.1% in 2022, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority-10, which saw the development as an indication that the area was recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic.
