On Thursday, the National Statistical Institute reported that the total revenue from nights spent in March increased by 53.1 percent to BGN 79.6 million.

Bulgarian residents’ earnings (up 58.1%) and non-residents’ (up 46.4%) increased.

In March 2023, 2,124 lodging facilities were operating nationwide, including hotels, motels, campgrounds, mountain chalets, and other short-term lodging facilities with more than 10 beds. These facilities contained 60,500 rooms and 124,100 bed-places.

Compared to the same month the previous year, there were 19.3% more beds and 23.7% more lodging establishments overall.

More than 1 million nights were spent across all lodging facilities, up 29.0% from March 2022. The lodging facilities with 1 and 2 stars had the largest rise, up 38.3%.

In the time frame, 4 and 5-star hotels hosted 77.2% of all overnight stays made by non-residents and 42.1% by Bulgarian citizens.

In addition to 29.1% of all nights spent by Bulgarian citizens, almost 16% of all nights spent by non-residents were in three-star hotels.

They were 6.4% and 28.8% in the remaining lodging facilities (with 1 and 2 stars), respectively.

In March, there were 453,100 arrivals across all types of accommodations, up 31.9% from the same month in 2022. This rise was attributed to non-residents (up 33.7%) and Bulgarian residents (up 31.2%).

There were 327,100 Bulgarians who stayed the night in a hotel, spending 2.1 nights on average.

The 126,000 non-resident arrivals stayed 2.8 nights on average, with 75.7% in four and five-star hotels.

With a 1.9 percentage point rise from March 2022, 27.0% more beds were occupied overall in lodging facilities.

The 4 and 5-star hotels had the largest occupancy of the bed spaces (37.2%), followed by the 3-star hotels (25.3%), and the 1 and 2-star hotels (16.3%).
