Petition to reopen COC file and postpone polls is denied by the Comelec.

The applications to reopen the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) and postpone the May 9 elections were denied by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The petitions submitted by the PDP Laban faction led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi and the National Coalition for Life and Democracy (NCLD) were unanimously dismissed, according to Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez.

“It (Cusi’s plea) was dismissed, as was the petition to postpone the elections until 2025.” “They both flatly rejected it,” he stated in a virtual press conference on Wednesday.

He claimed that the group’s arguments were unfounded.

“The petition also alleged that the Comelec has the authority to set the timetable and basically short of saying that the Comelec was arbitrary in setting the timetable and we showed that it’s not arbitrary and, in fact, the petition had in fact ignored a bunch of priority activities that made the schedule to be set the way it was,” Jimenez added.

He stated they would have to wait for the real verdict on the NCLD petition before making a decision.

“Right now, they’re simply deciding,” Jimenez explained, “and they’ve all decided that it should be denied.”

Meanwhile, he claimed that the Malasakit Party List was denied accreditation because it did not match the qualifications for a sectoral party-list organization.

“They were unable to demonstrate that they were representing the underrepresented marginalized segment,” he said.

The accreditation of Mother’s For Change has been approved by the Comelec (MOCHA).

“Granting the petition for accreditation was a simple decision because MOCHA met all of the relevant requirements for a sectoral organization.” “That was the basis for the decision,” Jimenez explained.
