More than 50 million people are currently affected by urban strife, according to the United Nations.
Fighting within towns and cities around the world is affecting more than 50 million people, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Guterres noted that when explosive weapons are used in inhabited areas, 90 percent of people murdered had no role in provoking the violence. He was speaking at the start of a UN Security Council debate on how to safeguard civilians caught up in urban combat.
“Civilians can suffer tremendous harm both immediately and later,” he added, noting that many victims have permanent disabilities and severe psychological anguish.
Guterres cited the hundreds of schools and health-care facilities that were destroyed in Gaza last year amid conflict between Israel and Hamas, claiming that almost 800,000 people were left without access to piped water.
Last May, an explosive attack outside a Kabul high school killed 90 pupils, mostly girls, and injured another 240 people, he claimed.
“Aside from the obvious agony and suffering, the indirect repercussions of school harm vary from educational impairment to an increased risk of early marriage and recruitment into armed groups,” he noted.
“Urban violence displaces millions of people, contributing to record numbers of refugees and internally displaced persons,” Guterres added.
He emphasized the importance of “accountability for significant violations” and asked member nations to show political determination to investigate and prosecute potential war crimes to the fullest degree possible.
“We owe it to the victims and their families โ and it’s also critical to act as a strong deterrent,” he continued.
