Go aims to safeguard its customers from internet frauds and bank hacking.

Following recent online frauds and bank hacking instances that affected a number of people, including public school teachers, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go promised that the government would go after the offenders and prosecute them under cybercrime laws.

“Maawa naman kayo sa kapwa ninyong Pilipino sa mga manloloko.” To the swindlers, have pity on your fellow Filipinos and gamitin n’yo sana ang oras ninyo para tumulong kaysa gumawa ng kalokohan (To the swindlers, have sympathy on your fellow Filipinos and gamitin n’yo sana ang oras ninyo sana ang oras nin Please spend your time to help instead of engaging in criminal actions, as we are in the midst of a crisis),” Go stated in a news release on Tuesday.

Go emphasized that the government will not relent in pursuing the culprits in order to bring justice to the victims of these murders.

A big online robbery apparently targeted over 700 Banco de Oro customers in December of last year. The criminals allegedly accessed the victims’ bank accounts and drained monies by allegedly avoiding the One-Time-Pin requirement, according to the preliminary findings.

On January 21, the National Bureau of Investigation verified the arrest of five suspects in the robbery.

The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition said three days after the arrests that it had received many complaints from its members, primarily public school teachers, about unauthorized transactions in their LandBank of the Philippines accounts. Some of them, according to reports, lost as much as PHP121,000 from their accounts.

LandBank, on the other hand, declared that its system had not been compromised. It claimed instead that the teachers were the victims of a phishing fraud that exposed their personal information.

Go urged the people to remain watchful and suspicious of these scams.

He recommended people to exercise caution, such as not clicking on strange links or attachments sent by email or SMS (short message service).

“Pinapaalalahanan ko ang ating mga kababayan: Huwag po tayo magpaloko,” says the narrator. (I would want to warn our people that if there is no need to be tricked, do not allow themselves to be fooled.) Untrustworthy folks will not succeed if you refuse to be tricked),” Go added.

Go has pledged to support the passing of the SIM Registration Act, which aims to safeguard the public from criminal acts such as fraud, text scams, terrorism, obscene messages, and disinformation.

Meanwhile, he believes that the banking system and the financial sector should continue to invest in cybersecurity and follow best practices in IT. He also requested them to work together to ensure the financial sector’s integrity.

“Because of the chaos, napakaraming Pilipino po ngayon ang gumagamit ng digital platforms upang magsagawa ng kanilang financial transactions.” Malaki man ang dalang ginhawa ng mga ito, nakita po natin na may kakulangan pa rin tayo pagdating sa pagprotekta sa ating mga kababayan laban sa mga krimen sa mga digital platforms na ito. Despite the fact that they provide a lot of comfort, we recognize that we still have gaps when it comes to protecting our citizens from crimes committed on these digital platforms),” Go stated.

“Kaya naman po hinihikayat ko ang mga bangko at iba pang financial institutions at mas paigtingin pa nila ang seguridad ng kanilang mga digital systems para masigurong protektado ang inyong mga kliyente,” he said.

While Go recognizes the benefits of digitizing public and private transactions, he is concerned about the risks posed by criminals who may use these platforms to commit crimes. He introduced Senate Bill 1738, also known as the E-Governance Act, in 2020, with the goal of easing the transition of government procedures into the digital age.

Go encouraged the Department of Information and Communications Technology to secure the security, quality, and dependability of ICT infrastructure and services to safeguard the security of government processes. It will also be in charge of overseeing and regulating the construction and operation of all relevant infrastructure, systems, and facilities.

As long as these dangers are addressed, Go believes that digitizing public service delivery can solve the government’s deeply embedded and systemic corruption while also boosting its responsiveness, effectiveness, and efficiency.
