There hasn’t been an Omicron case in the Philippines yet: DOH

On Friday, a health official stated that no Omicron variant cases have been reported in the country.

During an online media event, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated that the government is conducting extensive backtracing and re-testing of those who entered the country from three African countries.

“We do our biosurveillance on a regular basis, and we also do backtracing,” she explained. “Nagre-retrospective sampling din tayo (we also do retrospective sample).”

From Nov. 15 to Nov. 29, a total of 254 tourists arrived from South Africa.

Only one of the 254 people tested positive for Covid-19, while the other 83 were negative.

134 people are still waiting for test results, whereas 35 people didn’t need a swab test when they arrived.

Furthermore, the Bureau of Quarantine and the Department of the Interior and Local Government are still contacting 183 people, while the remaining 71 have been contacted and validated.

Three of the 71 people who were contacted and verified are South Africans.

“In Region 6, all South African nationals have been properly vaccinated and are currently asymptomatic. They are currently under home quarantine and have undergone re-swabbing with findings awaited, according to Vergeire.

A re-test is still required for around 67 of the contacted and verified persons.

Other arrivals from Burkina Faso and Egypt, according to Vergeire, are currently being processed for sequencing at the Philippine Genome Center.

“Each of these countries has a traveler who tested positive for Covid-19… as long as the CT [cycle threshold] values are appropriate, ipapadala po iyan sa (all those who tested positive for Covid-19, as long as the CT values are appropriate, we will send them to the) Philippine Genome Center for genome sequencing,” she said.

The government has enhanced its arrival regulations for non-red-list nations by extending the facility-based quarantine to five days for those who have been vaccinated and seven days for those who have not been vaccinated.

Furthermore, they must fulfill the obligatory 14-day home quarantine.

There have been 416 occurrences of the Omicron variation discovered so far in 35 countries.
