Duterte has urged Congress to approve key economic legislation

President Rodrigo Duterte asked Congress on Wednesday to make the approval of measures that would assist the country’s economy recover from the effects of Covid-19 a top priority.

Duterte made the announcement at the ceremonial signing of legislation that he had previously approved earlier this month. Some members of Congress were present at the occasion.

“I am hopeful that when both chambers of Congress reconvene this year, the remaining major projects of my administration will be accorded top attention. And this will include the Comprehensive Tax Reform Program, the Retail Trade Liberalization Act, the Foreign Investments Act, and the Public Service Act, among other things,” he stated in an address at Malacaan Palace.

He said that he wanted these measures on his desk “as soon as possible” for signing.

Duterte also praised Congress for the approval of four legislation approved last month, which he characterized as evidence of the legislative and executive branches’ “fruitful cooperation.”

He was referring to Republic Act (RA) 11549, or an Act Lowering the Minimum Height Requirement for Applicants of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and Bureau of Corrections (BuCor); and Republic Act (RA) 11544, or an Act Converting the Municipality of Calaca in the Province of Batangas into a Component City to be Served by the Philippine National

“Let me express my gratitude to members of Congress for their unwavering commitment to ensure that my administration’s legislative agenda is converted into meaningful policies and programs that will enhance the lives of every Filipino,” he added.

Meanwhile, he voiced the expectation that government departments will work together more effectively.

“As we take more tangible measures to resurrect our economy and assist our people in recovering from the pandemic’s impacts, I hope that more government agencies promote better collaboration among themselves. We need to use a whole-of-nation approach now more than ever to provide an inclusive and seamless response to the nation’s present challenges,” Duterte remarked.

He also reassured Filipinos that the government would continue to promote policies that would help them live better lives.

“With the assistance of Congress, I am sure that we will be able to carry out our legislative agenda and establish a climate that is favorable to the development and development of our people and our country. Let us continue to work together to ensure a brighter future for our dear nation and the next generation,” he added.

On July 26, when the President gives his sixth and last State-of-the-Nation Address, Congress will reconvene its third and last regular session.
