CEBU CITY, Philippines – Governor Gwendolyn Garcia announced Tuesday that coastal communities whose fishing equipment was devastated by Typhoon Odette last December will receive boat-building materials from the provincial government.

Garcia said roughly 6,000 fishermen will be included in the Dasig Sugbu (Cheer Up Cebu) support program during a relief coupon distribution for typhoon victims in San Fernando town.

She claimed that 1,000 of these fishermen may be eligible for PHP25,000 in insurance benefits, with the provincial government paying the price.

“However, what can they (uninsured fisherman) do?” The typhoon obliterated their boats. “There’s no other way to make a living; they don’t have anything to spend, to buy food,” she said in Cebuano, citing the need to help uninsured fishermen even more.

Each fisherman can use his Dasig Sugbu card to get marine plywood, nails, and Marine Epoxy to create a new fishing boat.

Aside from the materials, each fisherman will receive PHP2,000 in cash, which he can use to purchase other materials such as wood, bamboo, and paint.

“While there are a lot of them who need support, we’ll make sure that the money we set aside for that help goes to the intended recipients, who we believe are in desperate need of it to get back to normal life and continue rebuilding their lives,” Garcia added.

She said that PHP2 billion from the provincial coffers had almost been depleted by the distribution of cash coupons to typhoon victims whose homes had been devastated by “Odette.”

She stated that as of Tuesday, more than 300,000 homes had been partially or completely destroyed by the typhoon.
