Germany examines hydrogen’s potential as a PH energy source.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” The German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GPCCI) says it is looking into the possibilities of green hydrogen as a future energy source in the Philippines.

“The German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry is currently assessing the market potential of green hydrogen and fuel cell applications in urban and remote areas in the Philippines on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV),” GPCCI said in a statement Monday.

According to GPCCI executive director Christopher Zimmer, Germany’s green hydrogen technology know-how can assist the country increase the amount of renewable energy in its energy mix while also lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

“We believe German technology firms can make a significant contribution to the country’s energy transformation,” Zimmer added.

He went on to say that the modifications to the Foreign Investments Act and the Public Service Act will make it easier for German and Philippine companies to collaborate on exploring and investing in this industry.

Mark Shiels, vice president of energy systems at German hydrogen technology business H2 Core Systems GmBH, said the Philippines should invest in hydrogen technology since it is important for climate protection.

“The application of green hydrogen and fuel cell technology in the Philippines, a geographically dispersed country, can be an environmentally beneficial alternative to diesel generators, which are widely used as backup power in metropolitan areas and as a power source in rural off-grid areas,” Shiels added.

Germany’s goal of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 through investing in research and technological development, as well as hydrogen trade cooperation and partnerships with other countries, includes green hydrogen.

Meanwhile, the Department of Energy is investigating hydrogen as an alternative energy source that will drastically reduce carbon emissions in the United States.

It recently joined with companies from Australia and Japan to investigate the possibilities of hydrogen as a future energy source for the country.
