Early April will see the opening of the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced on Monday that the historic Binondo-Intramuros Bridge will open early next month.

Undersecretary Emil Sadain of the Department of Public Works and Highways informed Secretary Roger Mercado that the new bridge connecting Manila’s Binondo and Intramuros districts across the Pasig River is ready to open between April 5 and 9.

“Construction personnel will continue to work on the bridge this week to put the final touches on the roadway, ramps, and other components,” he said in a news release, “but it could open to traffic sooner before the 2022 Holy Week begins on April 10.”

Sadain said the new two-way four-lane Binondo Intramuros Bridge, which also has a sidewalk for pedestrians and joggers separated by safety railings and a marked lane for bikers to encourage the use of non-motorized modes of transportation, will see around 30,000 vehicles per day when it opens to motorists.

He stated that the access ramp from Plaza del Conde Street to San Fernando Street is still to be completed, but that an access ramp from Rentas Street to Juan Luna Street is already in place.

The bridge gleams at night thanks to the illumination of lighting, thermoplastic pavement markings, painted steel arch main bridge, and metal railings, despite the fact that it is not yet complete.

The steel arch main bridge’s basket handle-tied design is being hailed as the new symbol of the Philippines’ long-standing relationship with the People’s Republic of China.

“The contractor, China Road, and Bridge Corporation were given instructions to complete the most critical works and prepare for a possible project inauguration by none other than President Rodrigo Roa Duterte,” Sadain added.

The Binondo-Intramuros Bridge, together with the Estrella Pantaleon Bridge, which is set to open in 2021, are two major infrastructure projects sponsored by a Chinese grant in support of Duterte’s “Build, Build, Build” policy.

These bridges are part of the Metro Manila Logistics Network Program, which aims to reduce traffic congestion on major highways in the city by building new bridges across the Pasig and Marikina Rivers, as well as the Manggahan Floodway, in order to provide Filipinos with seamless travel and connectivity.
