‘Xi Jinping would like to chat with me,’ Duterte said.

MANILA, Philippines β€” On Thursday, President Rodrigo R. Duterte disclosed that Chinese President Xi Jinping had requested a meeting with him.

Duterte said he would meet with Xi on April 8 at a speech in Lapu-Lapu City. He didn’t specify whether their talk would take place over the phone or in person.

“I’m supposed to…on April 8th.” I’d like to be Xi Jinping’s kausapin. (Xi Jinping is interested in speaking with me.) He said, “We’re buddies).”

He also didn’t say anything about what they were going to talk about.

Duterte has stated in multiple speeches that he is willing to travel to China to personally thank Xi for the Covid-19 vaccines that China has supplied.

He previously hailed China’s vaccine donation as a “gesture of friendship and solidarity,” which he believes is a defining feature of the Philippine-China relationship.

Duterte’s most recent trip to China was in August of this year. It was there that he brought up the Philippines’ 2016 arbitral victory in the South China Sea against China’s broad maritime claims (SCS).

China has refused to accept the Philippines’ historic win at The Hague on numerous occasions.

I’m not one to sit around and do nothing.

Meanwhile, Duterte maintained his warning that “China will not sit passively” if Russia decided to deploy nuclear weapons during its invasion of Ukraine.

“I also recognize that if there is a full-scale conflict, it will spill over.” There will be significant consequences if Russia attacks. Ang China will not remain passive. He added, “Babanat din siya, kukunin niya ang Taiwan (It will also attack, it will take over Taiwan).”

According to him, the Philippines could be in difficulty as a result of this episode.

“Ang Pilipinas tatamaan din tayo if there’s a full-scale war kasi mayroong mga Amerikano dito,” he continued.

If the US intervenes in the Russia-Ukraine crisis, Duterte says the Philippines would not send troops to help.

“I will never, ever, ever send my Armed Forces ko, sundalo ko (my soldiers) to war.” He stated, “We are not even related, no matter how large or small.”

Should international leaders want it, Malacaang said Duterte may arbitrate in the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine.

Despite this, Duterte has stated numerous times that the Philippines will remain neutral during the crisis.
