MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Army (PA) received two vehicle-mounted mine detectors (VMMD) early this month, giving it a much-needed boost in its ability to identify and clear mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The two VMMDs will be assigned to the 525th Engineer Combat Battalion, the 51st Engineer Brigade’s humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) unit, according to Army spokeswoman Col. Xerxes Trinidad.

“The mine identification and clearance activities will be conducted by the up-armored and modified tractors,” he continued. Last April 9, the two VMMDs were formally presented to the PA.

“The new assets, which were acquired through a government-to-government agreement between the Philippines and the United Kingdom (United Kingdom), are part of the Revised AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) Modernization Program’s Horizon 2 (2018 to 2022) programs,” Trinidad stated.

The Armor Division’s armored mortar carriages and the Artillery Regiment’s ATMOS 155mm self-propelled howitzer are among the other newly acquired big-ticket projects for the PA under Horizon 2.

By July 2023, two further VMMDs will be delivered to the PA.

Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., PA head, previously stated that his priority will be to guarantee that Filipino soldiers are provided with the resources, equipment, and capabilities necessary to enable the Army to modernize and achieve its aim of being world-class by 2028.

Resources include the essential equipment as well as the development of soldiers’ skills so that they are ready to face the challenges of threat neutralization.
