MANILA, Philippines — In June, the third month of its “libreng sakay (free ride)” initiative, the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) continues to set daily ridership records.

The rail line claimed in a Facebook post on Thursday that it served 370,713 passengers on Wednesday, breaking the previous high of 370,276 sets on Tuesday since resuming operations in June 2020 during the coronavirus outbreak.

“Ito ay resulta ng pagpapatupad ng libreng sakay ng MRT-3 at pagpapatakbo ng mas maraming train sets, na binubuo ng nasa 14 hanggang 16 3-car CKD train sets, at apat na four-car CKD train sets,” it stated.

The MRT-3 serviced over 350,000 passengers for the 10th consecutive weekday on Wednesday.

“Matatandaan na nasa 250,000 sa 300,000 mga pasahero ang sumasakay sa MRT-3 kada araw bago magsimula ang pandemya noong Marso 2020,” it stated.

It had previously been said that due to the MRT-3’s “extensive” repair, there had been no unloading problems or train breakdowns since July 16, 2020.

Unloading incidents and MRT-3 train malfunctions were widespread before President Rodrigo Duterte took office in 2016, but have reduced over time, with 586 unloading events in 2016, 463 in 2017, 57 in 2018, 28 in 2019, and zero incidents since 2020.

The MRT-3’s free-riding promotion began in March and has been extended several times since then, with the program due to finish on June 30.
