During the campaign period, candidates in the May 2022 elections are permitted to hold e-rallies…
Watchdog started an online petition to hold elections on December 5.
The 2022 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), scheduled to take place on December 5 of this year, are being called for by a group of election attorneys in an online petition.
The Legal Network for Truthful Elections (Lente) invited people to support the online signature drive in a Facebook post on Thursday.
The public can access the online petition at https://chng.it/sDK9JJnT if they support it.
The group continued, “We implore the local community leaders and youth organizations to support our appeal to proceed with the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections in December 2022.
The electoral watchdog organization observed that the BSKE was late because it had been delayed three times since 2016.
It said: “LENTE reiterates its position to continue its conduct as scheduled given the recent movement at the House of Representatives 264-6-3 vote on its third and final reading of House Bill 4673, which will postpone the December 5, 2022, Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections.
Lente also mentioned that synchronized Barangay and SK elections were held every first Monday in December and every three years by Republic Act 11462.
“However, in the past, BSKE were frequently postponed, and officials wound up serving for up to five years. The requirement of holding elections regularly, as stated in Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is broken by this delay. Despite being a key priority, the pandemic response shouldn’t have interfered with citizens’ fundamental right to choose their barangay and SK leaders, they continued.
Without a legal delay, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) declared that it would continue to prepare for the elections.
Over 91 million ballots will be printed by the election body starting next week.
