DepEd to increase security and mental health initiatives

In response to reported cases of school violence, the Department of Education (DepEd) promised on Thursday that it would improve coordination and solutions for security and mental health issues.

Sara Duterte, the vice president and education secretary, has directed school administrators to work with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and “subsequently submit reports on steps taken,” according to DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa in a Viber message.

Sara Z. Duterte, the vice president and secretary of education, “has directed our Field Operations to issue a directive for all Regional Offices and Schools Division Offices to coordinate with their PNP counterparts in the Region, Cities, and Municipalities in order to identify schools which require spot inspections of weapons among staff and students,” he said.

Following allegations of bomb threats that led to the closure of some schools in Quezon City during test week, Poa made the remark.

A bomb threat was made to Ponciano Bernardo High School in Cubao by teacher Marlon Trinidad, according to a report from QCPD-Station 7.

It alluded to a Facebook post from a certain Bob Key Ser, saying, “May tinanim ako na bomba sa elementary, sasama tayong mauubos (I planted a bomb in the elementary school, we’ll die together)”.

However, there were no bombs discovered by the QCPD on the school grounds.

Prior to this, San Francisco High School and New Era Elementary School both received bomb threats.

In addition to bomb threats, details of other on-campus incidents have also emerged, including the death of a 12-year-old student who apparently accidentally shot himself on Thursday in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, while using his father’s police service revolver.

A 15-year-old student at Culiat Elementary School fatally stabbed a 13-year-old student on January 20.

Like the victim, the child mentioned above who is in legal trouble is in Grade 7.

In the meantime, the DepEd announced that it would work with mental health professionals to address school issues.

“We are aware of the most recent instances of violence in schools. The circumstances surrounding such instances demonstrate that they are linked to mental health conditions “said Poa.

“The DepEd will seek specialists to boost our mental health programs at the school level as a response to violence related to mental health concerns,” he continued.

In order to ensure that programs are implemented correctly and successfully, DepEd also reaffirmed its commitment to enlisting the help of professionals and supporters.

Meanwhile, lawmakers are taking action to guarantee that student’s mental health and well-being are protected in classrooms.

The Basic Education Mental Health and Well-Being Promotion Act, also known as House Bill 6574, was approved by the House of Representatives on Monday during the second reading.

The statute requires that mental health specialists be hired and that mental health offices be set up in every school.
