As the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) epidemic continues to pose a serious threat to people’s health and safety, the City of Cadiz in northern Negros Occidental has once again required the wearing of face masks in government offices.

On Tuesday, Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. stated that he has seen that basic public health practices are no longer followed and recommended citizens continue wearing masks in public settings, especially those with comorbidities who are more susceptible to getting the virus.

“One national office employee tested positive. Additionally, a department head’s outcome was favorable, he told reporters in a phone interview.

Escalante ordered city personnel and their clients to wear appropriate face masks when inside the secure government buildings in a Monday executive order (EO).

The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) and the Department of Health both issued established protocols and those who don’t follow them “shall face appropriate administrative and/or criminal sanctions under existing laws and regulations”, it added.

“We must not remain complacent. Additionally, this serves as a reminder that Covid-19 is still active and very powerful. Being healthy is just good, Escalante remarked.

The suggestion of the IATF-EID to issue an EO authorizing the voluntary wearing of face masks in indoor settings with few exceptions was approved by President Ferdinand R. Marcos in October of last year.

An EO enabling the voluntary use of face masks in outdoor settings, specifically in wide-open and sparsely populated outdoor regions with excellent ventilation, was approved by Marcos a month earlier.
