Fil-Americans in New York stage lighting rally vs. CPP-NPA
On Sunday evening, a group of Filipino-Americans in New York held a candlelight vigil to call on American authorities to investigate supporters of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and the New People’s Army (NPA) in the United States for terrorist financing, recruitment, and other illegal activities.
Members of the Filipino-Americans Against Crime and Terrorism (FACT) marched along Roosevelt Avenue in Woodside, Queens, chanting anti-communist slogans and carrying Philippine flags and other banners, distributing leaflets denouncing the CPP-NPA and their supporters in the United States on the terrorist group’s 53rd founding anniversary.
“Given that the Department of State identified the CPP-NPA as a terrorist group as early as 2002, US authorities should investigate CPP-NPA officials, members, and sympathizers in the US for terrorist financing, recruitment, and other illegal acts,” FACT said in a statement.
“Additional sanctions against the CPP-NPA should be imposed by US authorities for crimes done not only against Filipinos but also against Americans in the last 50 years.” For those who are unaware, the CPP-NPA was responsible for the deaths of thousands of people, including a number of US nationals, including Vietnam War hero Col. James Rowe and several other American service members stationed in the Philippines,” the statement continued.
FACT is a recently founded grassroots Filipino-American organization based in New York that has been speaking out against the CPP-NPA and its front organizations in the United States.
The group questioned the introduction of the Philippine Human Rights Act (PHRA) in the US Congress, which attempts to halt US military support to the Philippines due to alleged human rights breaches.
According to the FACT, the proposed legislation will benefit neither the Philippines nor the United States, nor the Filipino or American people.
“It’s sad that CPP-NPA supporters in the United States were able to persuade American legislators to support the PHRA by convincing them that the Philippine government is on the rampage and is responsible for the killings of thousands of innocent men, women, and children,” the group claimed.
“These parties conveniently ignored the CPP-horrible NPA’s atrocities against the Filipino peopleโcivilians accused of various offenses and summarily killed in the name of “revolutionary justice,” it said.
The group urged members of the Filipino community in the United States to contact their congressional representatives to express their opposition to the PHRA, claiming that “the bill will benefit only those who have vowed to subvert the interests of both the Philippines and the United States, as well as the Filipino and American peoples.”
“Rather than punishing the Filipino people by withholding security assistance needed to protect them from CPP-NPA atrocities, US authorities should assist Philippine authorities in defeating the communist insurgency in the same way they assist in the fight against Abu Sayyaf and other Islamist terrorist groups,” it continued.
Instead of suspending military aid, FACT believes the US should provide technical and other assistance to help the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police strengthen their capacity to protect Filipinos from drug cartels and other criminal organizations while also improving their human rights records.
FACT also warned Filipinos to be aware of CPP-NPA efforts to dupe them and their families, particularly the youth, into supporting their self-serving goal of destroying the Philippine government and putting a communist regime in its stead.
The United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines have all designated the CPP-NPA as a terrorist group.
