Increased vigilance against drug entry for the Masskara Festival
Brigadier General Leo Francisco, the head of Police Regional Office (PRO) 6 (Western Visayas), announced on Friday that police forces in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City would step up their efforts to prevent the potential entry of illegal substances for the Masskara Festival in October.
He told reporters here, “We have security measures in place, but with that kind of knowledge, we would probably quadruple our preparations.
On Friday and Saturday, respectively, Francisco arrived in the city for command inspections at the NOCPPO (Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office) and BCPO (Bacolod City Police Office).
He claimed that recently, police units in Western Visayas made arrests involving substantial amounts of illegal substances.
“The drug supply is still present. There is still a supply on the ground when you evaluate that. That is what we’re concentrating on in accordance with the Philippine National Police Chief’s instructions (Gen. Rodolfo Azurin). Who is discovered or taken into custody doesn’t matter to us. What matters is that we will make arrests in accordance with the law, said Francisco.
Illegal drugs are already being smuggled for the impending Masskara Festival, according to recent anti-drug operations in Bacolod and Negros Occidental.
As part of ongoing efforts to stop the introduction of illegal substances, the NOCPPO is currently keeping a tight eye on the ports in the province’s northern region.
Ports of entry in the north include those in the cities of Escalante and San Carlos, where cops have previously detained suspects coming from the nearby Cebu province with significant quantities of shabu.
On August 15, provincial police agents detained Jonalyn “Mommy Jing” Bugalon, the head of the Bugalon drug gang in southern Negros, in Kabankalan City.
During a buy-bust, Bugalon gave an undercover policeman suspected shabu for PHP20,000 in exchange for more shabu, worth PHP884,000.
High-value suspect Jeboy James Poneles was nabbed in Bacolod on August 15 with PHP1.4 million worth of shabu in Barangay Singcang-Airport, while suspect Ahzer Villarosa was detained with PHP4.31 million worth of shabu on August 14 during a buy-bust at home in Barangay Pahanocoy.
