Over 39K food packs are prepositioned by DSWD in Eastern Visayas.

To prepare for the effects of rainy days, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has prepositioned 39,082 family food packs (FFPs) in key Eastern Visayas locations.

Lawyer Jonalyndie Chua, information officer for DSWD 8 (Eastern Visayas), said in a phone interview on Wednesday that the stock of food supplies worth PHP25.35 million will ensure faster delivery of relief supplies in case of severe flooding and other disasters.

14,630 FFPs are kept in the Northern Samar towns of Allen and Biri, 1,000 in Eastern Samar’s Jipapad, 210 in Taft, and 1,000 in Guiuan, 11,222 are kept at the DSWD regional resource operations center in Palo, Leyte, and 4,800 are kept in Sogod, Southern Leyte.

Additionally, the DSWD has 600 FFPs prepositioned in Almagro, Samar; 1,400 FFPs in Santo Nio, Samar; 500 FFPs each in Maripipi and Kawayan, both in the province of Biliran; and 3,000 FFPs in Naval, also in Biliran.

“Our warehouses can hold their current volume at any one time. We were ready for the shear line that some portions of the region experienced over the past several days, Chua continued.

Families in Jipapad, Oras, and Guiuan in Eastern Samar have received FFPs as a result of the recent flooding brought on by the shear line, according to the DSWD.

Each FFP comes with six kilos of rice, five sachets of coffee, five sachets of cereal drinks, four cans of corned beef, four cans of tuna flakes, two cans of sardines, and five sachets of tuna flakes.

In addition, 11,237 non-food items worth PHP20.64 million have been prepared by the DSWD.

The local governments are required to be the first responders under the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010, and the DSWD is entrusted with boosting their efforts following disasters.
