The people of this area have been asked to exemplify Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s life and legacy as the nation’s national hero.

The call was made by Mayor John Dalipe as he presided over Friday’s celebration of Rizal’s 126th death anniversary in this city.

“What Rizal stood for must be embodied by us. His writings and bravery inspired a revolt that gave rise to our freedom from our colonizers, according to Dalipe. “Patriotism takes precedence above all other values.”

During the memorial program at the Rizal monument in front of the century-old City Hall here, Dalipe remarked, “Today, we are here to honor the bravery and heroism of our national hero who fought for the independence of our people.”

According to the mayor, the Rizal Day celebration should focus on “moving forward towards a more resilient community” and be centered around the topic “Rizalism: The emergence of peace via the power of the Pen.”

“We can’t let our troubled past follow us around,” he continued.

As a tribute to the national hero, Domingo Falcasantos, the regional commander of the Knights of Rizal-Western Mindanao, sang his rendition of the “Mi Ultimo Adios” during the performance.

On December 30, 1896, Rizal was put to death in Manila’s Bagumbayan, which is today known as Luneta Park.
